You will spend money on a lot of things.

1. Transcripts. Processing transcripts in out higher institutions don’t come cheap especially when you are sending the document abroad.

2. Evaluation of transcripts especially if you are applying to schools in Canada and the US. You may need a course by course evaluation done by WES or other agencies. You pay in hard currency.

3. You will spend money on data for research. You will send cold mails to professors, check Twitter and nairaland for hours everyday. It’s gonna cost money.

4. You may be required to write IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT OR GRE. Not a cheap money. IELTS is currently 83,000 Naira (£90.

5. You will pay application fees to the university you are applying to in hard currency.

6. You will need an international passport to start with if you don’t have one already.

These are just the basic things. Other ancillary fees are not included.

I see a lot of people thinking scholarships are totally free. When you start breaking down the basics, they are surprised. They think they are not supposed to spend one naira since it’s a scholarship.

You may spend all this money just to get to the stage where you will apply for the scholarship and still be denied.

To a certain extent you must have some funds to be able to get to the stage where you apply for a scholarship.

Some scholarships require you to have gained admission before you can apply. Others require you to apply for admission and the scholarship side by side.

The bottom line is that it will cost you time and money.

This is not to discourage you but to make you better prepared before your start.
