Breaking: ASUP Suspends Warning Strike,To Resume May 30

Following a directive from the Academic Staff Union of polytechnics, lecturers in public polytechnics across the country have been directed to resume on May 30.

Due to the unwillingness of the Federal Government to meet some demands, the union had started a two week warning strike on 16 May, 2022.

The demands included N15 biliion payment for polytechnics revitalization fund, review of condition of service, Payment of minimum wage arrears, etc.

It was previously reported that the Federal Government has started the payment of minimum wages arears for the lecturers in public polytechnics, Universities and Colleges of Education.

Although the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have said the payment was not part of its demands, ASUP had accepted contrarily.

The two weeks warning strike will be completed on the 29 May 2022 as concurred in the emergency meeting of the NEC. Following this, the union is asking it’s members to carry on with their duties from 30 May 2022, while hoping that government would make good use of the opportunity to address the other five outstanding demands.

According to the Punch, the union noted in a statement signed by Abdullahi Yalwa, it’s national publicity secretary, that further updates would be communicated after the 103rd NEC meeting planned to hold by June.

According to ASUP, the demands that have not been met by the government included:

Discharge of N15 billion revitalization fund for the sector.This dispute is still frozen up in the Federal Ministry of Finance with a vow of revisitation by the ministry of Education.

Release of the Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service: The document is still pending as it has been recollected from the Head of Service for further review.

Progressed impediment in the assigning of substantive Rectors for Federal Polytechnics in Mubi, Offa, and Kaduna.

Discharge of arrears of CONTISS 15 migration for the lower cadre. This dispute is still at the committee level set up to resolve the disagreement on the debated 2014/15 verification report.

Resolution of disputes with members in Colleges of Agriculture: The issue is yet to be confirmed as a resolution will require a contact between the Education ministry and Agriculture ministry.
