Local Fisherman Becomes a Millionaire Overnight After Rare Discovery
Narong Phetcharaj a local Thai fisher has made a rare discovery that has made him become a millionaire overnight
Narong found a large chunk of Whale vomit that was floating at the Niyom beach in the province of Surat Thani
The Whale vomit which weighed about 30kg is called Ambergis and is highly valuable and sought-after by perfume makers.
Narong who had only seen an Ambergris on the television suspected that it was very valuable and hence took it to an expert at Prince of Songkla University for testing, in which it was confirmed to be an ambergris.
Ambergris is sold for $37,500 (RM156,731) to $42,791 (RM178,844) per kilogram which makes Narong’s own to be worth about $1.25 million (RM5.22 million)
Speaking about it Narong said “None of the villagers has ever seen or touched a real whale ambergris before that’s why everybody was happy,”
“I’m so excited I don’t know what to do. I plan to sell the ambergris as I’ve already received a certificate to prove that it’s real.”
“If I can get a good price, I’ll retire from working as a fisherman and throw a party for my friends,” he added
Ambergris is a substance that is vomited mainly by Sperm Whales to ease the passage of large or sharp
objects. Once the Ambergris is vomited by the Sperm Whale, it solidifies and floats on the ocean surface.
At first, the Ambergris produces and foul smell but once it dries up, it produces a sweet and long-lasting fragrance. That is why it is sought after by perfume manufacturers
