Anambra Assembly passes bill to reduce cost of Burial Ceremonies

Prolonged and expensive burial ceremonies in Anambra State has been halted by a bill sponsored by Hon Charles Ezeani  a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Anaocha II Constituency.

The bill was passed into law on Wednesday 10th April 2019 by the Anambra State House of Assembly in the bid to stop expensive burial ceremonies in the State.

As a result of the passing of the bill, it is now an offense to hold burial ceremonies for more than one day in Anambra State.

It is worthy of note that before the bill was passed in Anambra State, communities held burial ceremonies for at least
three days.

Hon Ezeani disclosed to reporters that “The Burial/Funeral Control Bill is aimed at cutting down the cost of burials in the State.” and that “a monitoring and implementation committee would be set up by the Assembly to enforce the law after Governor Willie Obiano had signed it.”

In the event of death, the bill says “no person shall deposit any corpse in the mortuary or any place beyond two months from the date of the death, while burial ceremonies in the state shall be for one day”.

Also from the bill, it is now an offense to destroy property, fire gunshots, block roads during burial ceremony in the State.

The bill also added that “no person shall subject any relation of a deceased person to a mourning period of more than one week from the date of the burial”

and also, the family of the deceased “shall provide food for their kindred, relatives and other sympathizers at their own discretion.”
