Nigeria is a big country, and there are lots of places you can choose to live whether as a foreigner or as a Nigerian, but especially in a country like Nigeria, there are a lot of things you have to think about before you finally choose where to settle.
We are going to be running through the main factors you should consider, especially when you want to live in a country like Nigeria:
For me, this is the most important and the first thing I think you should consider as your life actually depends on it. Unfortunately, Nigeria is a dangerous place to live in due to the high level of crime, which sadly, nothing has been done to improve upon here, I would recommend choosing an area that doesn’t have too many uncompleted buildings, as this is a breeding ground for many criminals in Nigeria.
- Living expenses
For foreigners, this might not be a big issue, because the cost of living in Nigeria is relatively cheaper than in most countries. But for Nigerians this most likely will be a big issue. Places like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt will definitely be more expensive than states with a lesser number of immigrants. So, ensure that you can afford where you are going to live so that your landlord or landlady will give you peace of mind.
The most important of which are light and water, although electricity has always been a big problem in Nigeria, I’ve heard of places that haven’t seen light for close to a year, some worse, Unbelievable but true. If you’re the type that uses electricity to do business, consider this factor very well and choose an area that doesn’t have frequent power outages.
- Proximity to work, stores, etc.
I know a lot of Nigerians that wouldn’t mind moving into a forest just to become a house owner, apart from the fact that this is a threat to your security, you will most likely be spending a fortune on transportation expenses just to go to places like your work, children’s school, church, etc.
So, I hope these few points of mine will be able to help you find a good home for you and your family. Good luck with your house search!
