Breaking news: EFCC whisks away ex-Imo state governor Senator Okorocha Rochas

After over seven hours siege and one hour of shooting at the Maitama Abuja residence of former governor of Imo state Senator Rochas Okorocha, operatives of the Economic financial crime commission (EFCC) gained entrance into his sitting room and whisked him away.

The siege started at about 11:30 am with heavily armed policemen mounting all strategic locations inside and outside the premises of the former governor.

In a video the senator shared on his official Facebook page during the siege period, the All progressive congress (APC) presidential aspirant described the action of the anti-graft agency as an attempt to prevent him from attending the presidential screening of the APC party which was initially slated for today.

He further stated in the video that no formal invitation was extended to him by the agency before the raid on his house.

Efcc operatives after dispersing supporters of the former governor who gathered to protest the siege and arrest of the former governor of Imo state at his residence gained entrance into his sitting room.

A video on Instagram shared by a member of Rochas’ family shows the operatives of the anti-graft agency breaking in through the ceiling into the sitting room where Senator Rochas and his family were lying on the ground praying.

The senator’s son Amen was reportedly wounded in the fracas that ensued.

The operatives of the Efcc took the senator away in a white Hilux van at 06:48 pm with several armed policemen as escorts.

However, the spokesman of the anti-graft agency Mr. Wilson Uwujaren stated that the arrest of the former governor was because he refused to honor invitations after jumping the administrative bail granted him earlier by the agency.

Senator Rochas Okorocha is facing a 17- count criminal charge before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Abuja Federal High court. The arrest according to Mr. Wilson was to bring the senator to trial after he reportedly failed to honor two invitations.
