On Tuesday, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) gave telecommunications operators like MTN, AIRTEL, GLO, 9mobile, etc that operates within Nigeria to block any of their SIM cards that that is not linked to any National Identification Number (NIN).

NCC however warned the telecommunication operators not to fail to comply with the directive, else they risk losing their license and also incurring heavy penalties.

This directive is coming after an urgent meeting was held in Abuja on the 14th of December 2020 according to Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde the NCC Director of Public Affairs.

The meeting was convened by Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy with key stakeholders like the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Management of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Chief Executive Officers and Management of all telecom service providers in Nigeria were all in attendance.

It was in the meeting that they all agreed that SIM card owners should update their records with their National Identification Number – NIN so as to consolidate on previous SIM card registration and provide transparency and improve performance within the telecommunication sector.

We will recall that last week, the Nigerian Government through NCC asked the telecommunication operators to stop new SIM card registration so as to give room for a full audit of already registered SIM cards.

Many Nigerians took to social media to express their displeasure and stress the idea will impose on them.

Every subscriber is expected to link their SIM cards to their NIN between 16th December 2020 to 30th December 2020.
