Liposuction- Types, Preparation, Precautions, Aftermath, Results and more
There are many cosmetic procedures that one can opt for depending on his or her reason and or desired outcome. Liposuction is one of these cosmetic procedures and the most popular as different data records have shown.
Following the first article on this subject, this second piece is dedicated to giving you ample knowledge on the various types, preparation, precautions, results and my personal opinion on the liposuction procedure.
Just to refresh our memory, liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that makes use of suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body.
It’s is a major surgery and can be done on various parts of the body, depending on request.
Let’s delve into the main part of this article.
Types of Liposuction
There are four main types of liposuction which are highlighted below
1. Tumescent liposuction: This is the most common type of liposuction from the data and inquires made. In this type of liposuction, the surgeon will inject a sterile solution into the area which is being treated. The solution will contain a mixture of salt water (which will aid fat removal), an anesthetic (most likely lidocaine for pain relief) and epinephrine (a drug that will cause the blood vessels to constrict). This fluid mixture causes the affected area to swell and stiffen.
The surgeon will then make small cuts into the skin and insert a cannula (a thin tube) under the area of the skin that is being treated. The cannula is then connected to a vacuum that suctions the fat and fluids from the body. Body fluids may be replenished later through an intravenous (IV) line.
2. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): This type of liposuction is sometimes used in conjunction with traditional liposuction. During UAL, the surgeon will insert a metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy under the skin. This will rupture the fat-cell walls and break down the fat for easier removal. Due to the advent of technology, a new generation/version of UAL called VASER-assisted liposuction makes use of a device that may improve skin contouring and reduce the risk of skin injuries.
3. Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL): This technique makes use of a high-intensity laser light to break down fat for easy removal. During LAL, the surgeon will insert a laser fiber through a small incision made in the skin and which emulsifies fat deposits. The fat is then removed via a cannula (thin tube)
4. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): This type of liposuction uses a cannula that moves in a back-and-forth motion rapidly. The vibration as a result of the movement will allow the surgeon to pull out tough fat easily and faster. PAL may cause less pain and swelling sometimes and can allow the surgeon to remove fat with more precision. This technique is usually best for when large volumes of fat need to be removed or the individual had a previous liposuction procedure.
Preparation for the Procedure
– Certain restrictions on food which will be provided by the surgeon.
– Surgeon may recommend some medications and cancel some.
– Be at peace and be sure that you’ll want to go through with the procedure.
– Avoid hearsay, make all inquiries from your surgeon.
– Adhere to instructions give by you medical personel.
Precautions
-Be sure to inform the surgeon on what exactly you need done.
– Make plans to have someone take care of you because depending on the amount of fat removed, you would still need to remain under medical surveillance.
-Have the procedure done at a reputable clinic to ensure a higher percentage of success.
The Aftermath
After the procedure, there will be some pain, swelling and bruising after the procedure. Medication to help ease off the pain and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection may be prescribed by the surgeon.
Work, school and other normal activities will have to be on hold for a few days or weeks and this includes exercise.
Expect some contour irregularities as the remaining fat tries to settle into position.
Results.
The skin will begin to mould, adjusting to the contour of the treated area. The skin around the surgery area may be smooth or loose depending on the elasticity of the skin.
The treated area should look less bulky after the procedure showing that fat has been reduced. The results from the liposuction procedure is generally long lasting but only as long as a steady weight is maintained.
Now, over to my opinion. The liposuction procedure is indeed helpful to individuals with stubborn fat deposits in the body but it is a risk as quite a lot can be lost to the procedure.
It’s not something I’d encourage as I believe there is no such thing as ‘stubborn fat’, make the best of your exercise routine, eat healthily and think positive.
Liposuction is not a remedy to low self-esteem, obesity and a wierd shape.
Make the most of who you are and always remember to love yourself and your body.
