JUST IN: NLC Reject N27,000 New Minimum Wage

In a meeting held on Tuesday, the 22nd of January 2019 which started around 11 am, the National Council of State approved N27,000 as the new national minimum wage.

The Council Chamber which comprises of past Presidents and Heads of States, Chief Justices of Nigeria (CJN), the leadership of the National Assembly, State Governors etc approved the minimum wage bill and is expected to be sent to the National Assembly.

Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, said the Federal Government is topping the approved amount by N3,000 to N30,000 for Federal workers, and that State Governments are at liberty to augment the approved amount as they fit.

In a swift response from Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Secretary on Tuesday in Abuja after the General Council Meeting that Approved N27,000 as the new minimum wage said,

“It is abysmal of government to be delaying the submission of an Executive Bill to the National Assembly and by wrongfully adopting N27,000 through the Council of States,”

“The Federal Government is only projecting a shutdown of the economy with its latest action,” he added”.

He further said that the NLC will call an emergency NEC meeting on Friday to weigh on the deadline given to the Federal Government to submit the executive bill to the National  Assembly.

Saying

“This is because workers should not be held responsible for any development after its NEC meeting on Friday,’’ he said.
