HURIWA Urges NASS To Impeach President Buhari Over Lingering ASUU Strike

Hunan Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) on Wednesday had urged the National Assembly to pass a vote of no confidence and impeach the President of the country, Major, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

This was issued in a statement signed by HURIWA National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko which condemned the government’s action over the lingering ASUU strike in the country which began on February 14, 2022, and has continued to date with no progressive resolution in view.

The civil rights advocacy group said that students of the closed-down institutions in the country have become party to crimes such as prostitution, robbery, fraud, terrorism, cultism, kidnappings, and drug trafficking.

In the statement, the group called on the National Assembly to impeach the Nigerian President over the lingering academic strikes in the country which they note are endangering national security.

The group was of the view that the ruling government’s nonchalant attitude is because it is the children of poor Nigerians not that of the politicians are bearing the brunt of the academic strike.

According to HURIWA, the APC government in the just concluded party primary raked in over 2.5 trillion naira just from the sale of its presidential tickets, and much more from the governorship and senate ticket sales, not to mention that of the House of Representatives, state House of Assembly, and local government councilors. The government can release 1.1 trillion naira to the union from the party’s money if they are committed to ending the strike action.

The group stated that it would write to foreign embassies to reject children of government officials’ travel for academic purposes. It also asked the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to shun being compromised with money in the Aluta struggle and to continue public protests over the strike.

In retaliation to the resolve of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue the strike, the Federal Government of Nigeria has imposed a No-Work-No-Pay directive which has stopped the payment of lecturers in federal universities across the county.

This directive according to the Minister of Labor and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige complied with Section 43 of the Labour Law.
