Fire Outbreak in Calabar Market Destroys Goods worth millions

The popular market in Calabar, Cross River State caught fire on Thursday morning catches fire and goods worth millions of naira were destroyed by fire.

The fire was alleged to have started around 2 am on Thursday and no fewer than six shops in the shopping complex were destroyed.

The Commanding Officer, Calabar Command, Federal Fire Service, Mrs Olumayowa Olomola, confirmed the incident to the journalist and stated that the incident was a result of a power surge from one of the shopping malls at the market. Though she could not give the estimated values of the goods destroyed but said that all the shops are stocked with goods.

Mrs Olumayowa said that the timely intervention of her team; stopped the fire from spreading to other shops.

The Commanding Officer said: “Our response was timely and we could only prevent the fire from spreading beyond the six affected shops.

“My advice is that we should always adopt preventive measures by ensuring we put off all appliances to avoid incidents like this.” She added.
