EFCC Arrests Ex-CBN Gov. Emefiele
The Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, was picked up by EFCC operatives on Thursday night, less than an hour after he was released from the dungeon of the DSS.
Emefiele is currently being interrogated in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at the National Headquarters of the anti-graft agency, Jabi, Abuja.
A source revealed the incidents to the journalists on Friday morning, stating that the EFCC is detaining Emefiele over alleged incompetence during his tenure as the head Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria
“Yes, Emefiele is currently in our (EFCC) custody; he was arrested last night less than an hour after the DSS freed him. He’s currently being interrogated at the headquarters, as he’s being investigated for alleged misappropriation of funds amongst other things during his term as CBN governor,” the source noted.
However, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, at the point of writing this report could not be reached for official confirmation when reached by our correspondent on Friday.
The DSS disclosed that Emefiele was in detention for ‘some investigative reasons.’
Emefiele was arraigned on a two-count charge On July 25 for “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Lagos and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.
However, the Federal Government withdrew and the two-count charge was struck out on August 17. Another fresh 20-count charge was brought against him over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud etc. The ex-CBN Governor was allegedly reported to have proposed a plea bargain agreement with the Federal Government: resign as CBN governor and ‘disgorgement.’
Emefiele resigned on September 22 and the CBN officially confirmed it, as Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as substantive governor bank.
