Woman Leaves Newborn Baby to Die in Bauchi State

A newborn baby boy who was delivered on Wednesday has been abandoned by his mother on a rock in Sarkin Kudu area of Bogoro LGA, Bauchi State.

According to the Punch, the baby was found on Thursday morning without clothes and with his placenta intact and that a man-hunt has been launched to search for the baby’s mother by the security agencies and authorities of Bogoro LGA.

The incidence was confirmed by a Sarkin Kudu resident who said the baby was found on top of a rock in the area.

He said, “We woke up this morning with the sad news of a baby boy abandoned close to a bush. The mother of the baby left him crying with his face down to the ground on a rock in the area.”

“We quickly asked some of the women to save the baby and they did. It is really sorrowful that the mother left the baby without clothes and without removing the placenta.”

“The baby was delivered on Wednesday at the middle of the night and the mother left him thinking he would die by daybreak.”

“Though we are not happy with the development, we are glad the baby is alive and is in safe hands. We have to take care of the baby as human beings.”

He said the baby was given to social workers and mentioned that they had gone to buy the basic things for the baby’s care such as clothes and milk in the market.

A social worker in the area, who pleaded anonymous confirmed the incident to reporters and said the baby was found by residents of the area. She also said the baby was in their care.

Our office received a report about a baby who was abandoned by his mother yesterday (Thursday) in Sarkin. Before we got there, he had been picked and was being taken care of by one of the women.

He is now in good condition. We have also spoken with the security agencies and inquiries are going on to trace the child’s mother.

She said that the social welfare office of the LGA would continue to take care of the child until inquiries are finished and the child’s mother is found.

She expressed her appreciation to the residents of Sarkin Kudu and the woman who took care of the baby. She also pleaded with the baby’s mother to come and claim her baby.

Ahmed Wakil, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Bauchi State Command in a telephone interview with the Punch confirmed the incident but said the baby was found in an uncompleted building.

SP Wakil said: “Yesterday (Thursday), June 2nd, 2022 at about 8:30 am, some good people of the town went to Bogoro Divisional Police Headquarters and recounted how they saw an abandoned baby in an uncompleted building on their way to the farm.”

On receiving the complaint, the DPO and his team moved to the location and carried the baby to the hospital for medical check-up.

After the medical doctor certified that the baby was okay, they gave the baby to the Bogoro LGA Social Welfare Department.

“Inquiries are still going on. We are trying to look for the baby’s mother and know why she abandoned her baby in that way.”
