Labor Orders Shutdown of Power Supply and Flights in Imo Indefinitely

The NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah, disclosed that Ajaero, the national president of NLC was arrested by the police ahead of the state-wide protest in Imo on Wednesday. However, the police said that he was merely taken into protective custody to avoid a mob attack on him and denied the arrest.

Hope Uzodimma, the Imo State Governor, had accused the labor leader of venturing into the political affairs of the state.

However, many prominent Nigerians and civil society organizations, including the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, and human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) have condemned the attack on the labor leader have condemned by the security operatives.

Following the attacks on the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, last week, by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force. The Organised Labour consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Tuesday, gave an extraordinary order to shut down the electricity and fuel supplies into Imo State.

The Labour Centres took an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting through TUC and NUC on Tuesday afternoon and ordered the aviation workers to suspend flights from entering into and outside the state.

The statement read: “The NEC-in-session orders the immediate withdrawal of services and shutdown of Imo State beginning midnight today. All workers and affiliates are expected to ensure compliance from wherever they are. All flights into and out of Imo state, fuel supplies, and Electricity be stopped immediately as applicable. All Public and Private Sector workers are to immediately down tools indefinitely,” a communique released at the end of the meeting noted
