Just In: President Beji Caid Essebsi of Tunisia dies

Beji Caid Essebsi, the President of Tunisia has died at the age of 92 at a military hospital on Wednesday.

This is the second time he has been taken to the hospital in the last month. Before his death, he spent about a week at the hospital after he suffering a severe health crisis.

He had also appeared in public twice after he left hospital initially on  July 1st, 2019.

President Beji Caid Essebsi is the fifth President of Tunisia. President Essebsi was made the President of Tunisia in December 2014.

President Beji had previously served as minister of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1986 and as Tunisia’s Prime Minister from February 2011 to December 2011.

His son Hafedh Caid Essebsi while speaking about his fathers’ death said that President Beji Caid Essebsi was hospitalized on Wednesday after he suffered the effects of last month’s crisis, which also confirmed an earlier report from a local radio station.

President Essebsi before his death was a major player in Tunisia’s transition to democracy in 2011.

President Beji Caid Essebsi became a prominent figure in Tunisia after the overthrow of veteran autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

The overthrow of Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 was followed by an uprising against authoritarian leaders
across the Middle East including nearby Libya and Egypt.

He was born on 29 November 1926 at Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, Tunisia.

His is survived by his wife Chadilia Saida Farhat and children who are Mohammed Hafedh Caid Essebsi, Salwa Caid Essebsi, Amei Caid Essebsi, and Khelil Caid Essebsi.

Before his death, he was a member of the Nidaa Tounes Party.

He was the third-oldest serving state leader in the world.
