Former UNN VC Professor Umaru Shehu Dies at 92
The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka Professor Umaru Shehu is dead.
Professor Shehu died on Monday 2nd October 2023 as reported by the Dr Bulama Gubio the Secretary of the Borno Elders Forum.
Professor Shehu was aged 92 and is the Nigerian’s first Professor of Community Health.
Professor Umaru Shehu was born in Maiduguri on December 8th 1930.
He was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka from 1978 to 1980.
He attended his Elementary School in Maiduguri from 1935 – 1940. He attended Middle School in Maiduguri from 1941 – 1943.
He attended Kaduna College from 1944 – 1947. After which he proceeded to University College Ibadan 1948 – 1953 and then went to University of Liverpool between 1953 -1956 and 1966 – 1967.
Prof. Umaru Shehu is the first Emeritus Professor from Northern Nigeria and has an unmatched profile in the medical profession.

He was the former sole administrator of the University of Maiduguri and also the former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science
He is a fellow of the Institute of Cancer Research and also the British Medical Journal Editor in Chief.
Professor Shehu holds MBBS (London), IRCF (London), MRCS (England), DPH (Liverpool), FMCPH, MFCM, FFCM (UK), FFCM (Nigeria), FAS, FWACP, DFMC (Nigeria).
Before Prof Shehu’s appointment as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, He was offered a job as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Chief Medical Officer which he declined and then moved to Ahmadu Bello University to work as a Reader and Acting Head of Department of Community Medicine from 1968 to 1970.
He then became the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1968 – 1970, the Acting Director of the Institute of Health from 1969 -1970, Deputy Vice-Chancellor University of Nigeria from 1975 – 1976, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) from 1977 – 1978.
Prof Shehu also held visiting professorship at various universities including the University of Carolina School of Medicine United States.
Prof Shehu also worked with the World Health Organisation as a short-term consultant in Geneva in September 1970.
