Isese Day 2025: Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Osun Declare August 20 Public Holiday
Lagos, Nigeria – August 20, 2025 – States across the South-West, including Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Osun, have declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of Isese Day, an annual celebration of Yoruba traditional religion and culture.
📌 Lagos State
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that Lagosians would have the day off work, urging residents to celebrate peacefully while respecting the state’s diverse religious and cultural heritage. The Lagos government also revealed that over 3 million participants are expected to attend the celebration across different locations in the state, highlighting the growing recognition of Yoruba spirituality.
📌 Ogun State
In Ogun, Governor Dapo Abiodun emphasised the importance of preserving Yoruba traditional values. He declared the holiday as a mark of respect for the cultural identity of the people, assuring that Ogun would continue to support inclusivity and religious freedom.

Governor Seyi Makinde also approved the holiday in Oyo, calling Isese Day “a significant reminder of the need to preserve our traditions.” He urged celebrants to conduct themselves responsibly while showcasing the rich culture of the Yoruba people.

Osun, widely regarded as the cultural heart of the Yoruba nation, also joined in, with Governor Ademola Adeleke restating his administration’s commitment to protecting traditional heritage. Osun, which hosts annual festivals such as the Osun-Osogbo Festival, is expected to record a high turnout for the Isese Day celebrations.
